| Background: Karen McHale, a chemical engineer and volunteer firefighter and author .She has developed a training program for kids 12 years old and younger to learn about how to handle an emergency, by preparing, practicing, using team work, training and management. In preparing for an emergency, kids can start training, discover what type of emergencies happen in their state and then make an evacuation or a stay-in-place plan. They should learn what to do if they smell smoke, fall out of a raft or through the ice, how to help search and rescue personnel if they become lost. McHale is author of The Pact, a fun fantasy novel for children that provides important fire safety tips. Kids all over the US now have the ability to join Fire Station 2 (a virtual station), and start their training. Disasters are happening all the time across the US and kids can now learn to prepare and will not be afraid, if they know what to do and how they can help. Books and training materials are available at www.firestationbuddies.com.
